Work out what the project will produce
A useful waste estimate starts with the work itself. Walk through the rooms or outdoor area you plan to clear and note what is being removed. For a refit, include the old fittings as well as the packaging that will arrive with their replacements. Keep reusable possessions separate from the waste list.
The council’s Cumbernauld town-centre concept designs consider changes to Central Way and surrounding buildings. These are proposals, so plan a premises clearance around the access currently available at the building. Identify the loading entrance and check current site restrictions with the person managing the property.

- 01
Clearing a room
List the larger pieces first, then check cupboards and storage spaces. Decide which items will stay before anyone starts moving things out.
- 02
Refitting a property
Ask the people doing the work what will be removed at each stage. Include later waste when comparing the space you may need.
- 03
Emptying business premises
Agree which fixtures belong to the property owner and which can leave. Plan the clearance around staff, other tenants and incoming deliveries.
Skip sizes
Compare the four skip sizes
Use the approximate bag figures to compare capacity, then look at the project examples. The shape and type of your waste matter too. Confirm the loading rules for your particular materials when choosing a size.

Access and placement
Assess the route from the property to the skip
Check how waste will get from the work area to the proposed skip position. Steps, gates and shared entrances can affect that route. Separately, describe the vehicle approach to NSH, including overhead obstacles and anything that narrows the entrance. Do not judge access only by the space where the skip will stand.
Cumbernauld Village appears in North Lanarkshire Council’s conservation-area guidance. If your project is in the village, check the boundary and any permissions needed for alterations before removing building features. A skip booking does not settle those property permissions.

- 01
Identify the entrance
Give clear directions to the entrance intended for the job, especially if it differs from the main door or the address used for post.
- 02
Allow for other users
Find out who else uses the driveway, courtyard or entrance. Agree how neighbours and occupants will get through while the work takes place.
- 03
Explain awkward access
Mention tight turns, gates and parked vehicles when you enquire. Check the route again once materials for the project have arrived.
Waste details
Check council permission for a roadside skip
North Lanarkshire Council requires permission to place a builders skip on the public road. Its roads permits and permissions page identifies the section 85 skip application. Read the current requirements while planning the job, before relying on a space outside the property.
Give NSH the proposed position and establish who will deal with any necessary permission. Confirm that the position and hire dates fit the arrangements agreed for your booking. A nearby parking space is not automatically an authorised skip position.

- 01
Locate the space precisely
Explain which side of the property you mean and whether the proposed position is within the grounds or on the public road.
- 02
Check the current conditions
Read the council information for the planned placement. Resolve questions about permission before committing to a roadside position.
- 03
Coordinate the dates
Keep the agreed hire dates and permission details together. Tell anyone organising the work if either arrangement changes.
Before delivery
Keep the clearance organised as work progresses
Brief everyone helping with the job on what is leaving the property and what must stay. Keep the agreed waste list available and check any unexpected material before adding it.
Leave doors and walking routes usable as the clearance proceeds. Avoid storing new supplies in the approach needed for the skip.

- 01
Label retained items
Clearly mark fittings or possessions that should remain, particularly when several people are clearing different rooms.
- 02
Review unexpected waste
If the work uncovers something you have not discussed, set it aside and confirm the arrangements with NSH.
- 03
Keep access available
Check that parked cars, stacked supplies and other equipment have not obstructed the approach needed for collection.
Useful guidance
Check how your waste will be handled
Household and business waste have different responsibilities. Use the relevant Scottish guidance before handing waste over and agree who will keep any paperwork for the project.
- 01
Household waste checks
Before waste leaves your home, check the transporter’s registration and ask where it will go. The Scottish Government’s householder duty-of-care guidance explains these checks and safe storage.

Trade and business records
Describe the waste accurately and retain the relevant transfer information. Read the waste-producer guidance with the person responsible for the job’s waste arrangements.

Transport authorisations
Use SEPA’s waste transport information to understand the authorisation categories and find the official register when checking a provider’s documents.
